This 10-part series features three leaders involved with school boards and education legislation in Utah and Arizona.
With:
- Natalie Cline - former Utah State School Board member
- Monica Wilbur - former teacher and candidate for Utah State School Board
- Shelli Boggs - former Maricopa County, Arizona teacher and school board member, and current Superintendent of Schools
In this course, each of these leaders share their experience and insights on education reform and pushing back against concerning trends in the schools. It's very interesting to compare and contrast their different experiences.

Lesson 2 - School Board Success Stories

- Learn how Shelli helped spearhead a movement in her school district in Maricopa County, AZ in 2020 to prevent many of the agendas from overtaking the schools.
- Hear how, as a member of her local school board, Shelli helped that school district avoid federal curricula and systems that were compromised.
- Shelli's local school district banned things like Critical Race Theory from early on, with offending teachers and administrators able to be fired.

Lesson 3 - A Legislative Win

- Natalie and Monica spearheaded a bill protecting the Rights of Conscience of school kids, which gives a legal out for kids and parents to refuse participation in compromised aspects of schooling. The bill passed in Utah.
- They give examples of policies in Utah that infringe on students' Rights of Conscience.
- Students and parents must be aware of this bill, however, in order to invoke it within the schools.

Lesson 4 - Pitfalls With Crafting Education Legislation

- It's common for education legislation that sounds good to conservatives to actually not do what they think it will.
- Strategic ambiguity and loopholes are often added to bills - bad actors insert wording or exceptions so that the entire premise of the bill may be partially or even fully thwarted.
- Natalie and Monica give specific examples of education bills in Utah that ended up passing with loopholes and ambiguity.

Lesson 7 - SEL & Competencies - Baked into the "Cake" of Education

- On a Federal level, the "Every Student Succeeds Act" (ESSA) is a major driver of SEL in the schools. Repealing this bill would be an important step to disbanding SEL.
- Monica elucidates on all the tentacles of SEL that spread through nearly every aspect of education in Utah that would make it nearly impossible to cleanly remove.
- Natalie explains how Competency-Based Education and SEL go hand-in-hand, and how Utah's "Portrait of a Graduate" is the state framework that mandates these systems.
- They explain that SEL and Competency-Based Education are being designed to follow individuals through their entire careers and lives - to ensure that the entire populace, at all stages of life, accept the state-sponsored ideologies.

Lesson 9 - The Real Solutions of Sacrifice, Faith, and Hard Work

- There aren't easy answers, at this point.
- We have to be willing to stand and be truth-tellers, even if it causes us pain.
- Policy-makers must be unwilling to vote for bills that contain exceptions that defeat the point of the bill.
- Parents must be willing to do the hard things to ensure that their kids are properly educated.

- Being "effective" doesn't necessarily mean getting your policies passed.
- Telling the truth is always the right thing to do and will lead to the best results, eventually.
